COALITION PLEDGES MORE TROOPS TO IRAQ --------------------------------- The US-led coalition fighting Islamic State (IS) militants has pledged to send an additional 1,500 troops to Iraq. Lt Gen James Terry, who is coordinating efforts against IS, said the soldiers would be in addition to 3,100 US soldiers already promised. The US general did not indicate which countries from the coalition would provide the security personnel or how many of them would be in uniform or otherwise. The coalition of mainly Western and Arab states was set up after IS militants swept across northern Iraq, seizing swathes of territory and proclaiming a caliphate in parts of the country and neighbouring Syria. It is hoped the deployment of additional soldiers will increase the effectiveness of the Iraqi army, much of which proved ineffective under an IS onslaught last summer.
