COMING VERY SOON: Across the Faerie Glen, a snippet of chapter one; Chapter 1 ‘Cheese on toast again.’ Thought Daniel as he looked in the fridge. At twelve years old he lost both his parents and lived with his sick Grandmother who was now constantly laid up in bed. Nana Maud was a kindly lady, fragile slight frame and a smooth friendly face which made everyone smile. At eighty two she had lived a really exceptional life of excitement but when her daughter became pregnant with Daniel at fifteen, Nana Maud went into a great depression. Daniels mother abandoned him at birth, running away from home she has never been back since and poor Nana Maud was left holding the baby. Daniel has always been the apple of her eye but the last couple of years she has become victim to severe arthritis and the tables turned. Now Daniel has to care for his Nana, every day like clockwork he gets out of bed, does his paper round around the dusty streets of Manchester in England and then he takes breakfast to his sick Nana. After a day of school he goes home and makes dinner, if there is anything in to cook. Unfortunately Nana Maud was not a wealthy lady, struggling on a small pension, Daniel helps by purchasing food from the money he makes from his paper round, a good boy, a very good boy. Daniel was exceptional at his studies he excelled at English, Math, Science and Art but unfortunately he was not physical in anyway which meant he was far from the top of the ‘in crowd’. In fact he was a quiet shy and retiring boy who kept himself to himself. He struggled to make friends due to a lack of confidence but his one best buddy was a boy who live eight miles from him. Nanna Maud had lived in Denton on Foxhall Road since she married his grandfather. Living in an old Victorian style house it was very cold in winter and not so warm in the summer for that matter. The house stood in a tree lined quiet road quite close to the M67 motorway but it was never a bother as it was far enough away for it not to disturb them. Foxhall road was quiet, very few children lived in the area as the local renamed it ‘Gods Waiting Room’, a rather disturbing name for a place where the elderly tended to live. Daniel liked it that way, he wasn’t hindered by bullies on his way home from school and he preferred to live in peace and quiet rather than a child ridden hell as it was on the other side of Denton. The house was old fashioned, the windows were draughty and the door banged with the wind but never the less he loved the old place. The living room was large with a multicoloured green and blue carpet, green velour sofas that were expensive when the ark was built. The huge fireplace still burned coal and the anaglypter wallpaper was looking a little worn and yellowed with smoke from over the years. Daniel looked around the kitchen, some tiles were missing and the linoleum floor was worn and faded but one day he would pay to have it all updated, he was always promising his Nana that he would build her a real nice kitchen one day. She would just smile and squint at him through her glasses and thank him. Making cheese on toast for dinner Daniel whistled away as he cooked. He heard a creaking n the stairs, Nana must be trying to come down. Suddenly a huge bang rang out around the house and Daniel ran as fast as he could back through the living room, through the door and found his Nana lay at the bottom of the stairs in front of the front door. “Nana?” He whispered to her still body. “Nana, are you okay?”
