APC Threatens to Reject Results Early results from some polling units across Anambra State yesterday showed the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Chris Ngige and his All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Counterpart, Chief Willie Obiano, as closely leading in the governorship election. The results, which were still not conclusive at the time of going to press, also showed the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Comrade Tony Nwoye, as trailing behind the APC and APGA candidates in the polling units. A total of 23 candidates contested on the platforms of various political parties in the Anambra election, with the candidates of APC, APGA, PDP and Labour Party (LP), Mr. Ifeanyi Uba, seen as the major contenders. According to results from a polling unit in Ogidi Town Hall in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state, APC scored 58, APGA 23, PDP 22 and LP 4. Similarly, in another polling unit in the same area, APC got 39, APGA 8 and PDP 14. In Aroma Ward 1 in Awka South Local Government APGA polled 34, APC 32, PDP-15 and LP 13. Also, in Polling Unit number 008 of Ward 403 in Ogbaru Local Government Area, APGA leads with 111 votes, followed by APC, with 87 and then PDP with 20 votes. Results obtained from Oruagu Ward 1, showed APC in the lead with 4,782 votes, APGA with 1,200 votes, PDP with 900 votes and LP with 15 votes. Sunday Trust, however, learnt that only a fraction of the results were available before nightfall yesterday, as election officials were said to be collating more results from different parts of the state after nightfall. Election observers said the poll was conducted peacefully across the state. A large number of security forces were deployed to the state ahead of the Saturday’s election, in addition to a 22-hour curfew that was imposed on the state. Electorate complained about the late accreditation of voters in many polling units. In Idemili North and Idemili South, believed to be stronghold of the APC governorship candidate, Ngige, voters said electoral materials were not supplied to the polling units. Speaking to newsmen by telephone, Ngige lamented that not only the 180,000 voters of Idemili North were disfranchised, but also voters in some parts of the state capital, Awka, Njikoka and Dunukofia Local Government areas, where he has strong support were disenfranchised. In Ogidi ward, thugs who were believed to be working for other political parties snatched all the electoral materials, thereby disfranchising the eligible voters, it was learnt. However, in some other wards monitored in Onitsha, Obosi and Oba, accreditations went on smoothly between 8 am and 12 pm, even as INEC officials insisted that voting proper would commence at 12. 30pm. At ward number II in Nkpor Junction, aggrieved voters complained about non-arrival of INEC officials for the election as at 1pm. On his part, the APGA candidate Chief Obiano had expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the election. It was also discovered that there was low turnout at the various polling centres and many eligible voters who turned out could not find their names on the voters’ register. At St. Augustine ward 2 Umuoba-Anam, Eri Primary School ward 1 in Otuocha, Nsugbe 1 and Ilo Abitor square 1 in polling zone 09-001 in Anambra East Local Government area, many voters complained of missing names. Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Sunday for a makeup election for voters in 65 wards of Obosi in Idemili North Local Government Area. INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Anambra, Prof Chukwu Onukogu, said in a statement signed by the commission’s Public Relations Officer Frank Egbo that the rescheduled election would hold between 8am and 12.30pm today. He said said its decision to shift the polls was owing to the late arrival of electoral materials at the polling units, which he blamed on logistics. The electoral body earlier disclosed that it had ordered the arrest of the official who was responsible for the late delievery of the materials to the affected wards.
