COMPRESSION I often get asked what does it do? When should I use it? And does it work!!! Compression works by simply exerting pressure on the superficial veins which increases arterial pressure and returns blood more effectively to the heart and circulation is stimulated more blood more oxygen to the muscles (this can enhance performance, maintain muscle condition, warmth and speed up recovery after exercise or onset of injury). Compression is not new its been used medically for several years to reduce the risk of DVT and swelling post operatively. For an injury such as SHIN splints where bone and muscle are involved compression helps reduce movement, vibration and prevents swelling collecting and hardening in the tissues. I tend to use compression tights after intense running sessions or cycle races to reduce muscle soreness. I have also found some success for calf strains and knotted muscles but only as part of rehab treatment with massage, stretching and good clean nutrition in the mix. Benefits of Compression include; Reduces risk of sports related injury Supports and protects muscles Maintains body temperature Reduces post exercise soreness Improves venous return and circulation Can help speed up recovery
