CONFIRMED by tests undertaken by our Health Practioner - JAYS REACTION was EXPOSURE TO NUT. What does this mean? As Jay is anaphylaxis to ALL NUTS , it is highly likely he EITHER came into contact with someone who ate nuts last Monday (skin contact), or someone had ate nuts and was within a 1 metre radius of Jay (airborne particle reaction). YES this is possible... so in this instance please if you eat nuts for breakfast please ensure you and your child wash their hands, mouth and clean your teeth to AVOID putting someones (my childs) life at Risk! This is not exaggerated, this is REAL! It has become obvious to me after Jays reaction that many people are still not aware and educated on these life threatening allergies, which has prompted me and also Jays school to become proactive and try to spread awareness and education with Allergies. I am going to address the NUT allergy in this post as there seems to be a grey area surrounding what is a NUT? PLEASE BE AWARE THAT NUT ALLERGIES ARE LIFE THREATENING. People who have NUT ALLERGIES can be at risk from ALL NUTS ( in Jays case) not just Peanuts. Skin to skin contact and air borne particles from others eating nut products are equally as potentially DANGEROUS! The person (Jay in this event) DOES NOT HAVE TO EAT the product to be AFFECTED AND AT RISK OF DIEING ! Sound exaggerated, well its not. We are fortunate that Jay is in Prep and the supervision is very hands on at this age, as it is their 1st year of school, and teachers were there at the beginning of the reaction. Next year he is older and like Jay he has other fellow students at his school that also share his Life Threatening Food Allergies!! PLEASE DO NOT THINK WE ARE HELICOPTER PARENTS THAT ARE CLEAN FREAKS AND HAVE BOUGHT THIS UPON OURSELVES! Dont you worry we as Mums and Dads have already exhausted every avenue to beat ourself up and ask the question WHY! The FACT - LIFE THREATENING FOOD ALLERGY - MY CHILD COMES INTO CONTACT WITH NUT - OUR CHILD MAY DIE IF THEY DO NOT GET THE CORRECT MEDICAL ATTENTION IN TIME! FOODS TO BE AVOIDED INCLUDE :- PEANUT BUTTER ANY VARIETY of NUTS including TREE NUTS LIKE ....ALMONDS,CASHEWS,MACADAMIA, HAZELNUTS, WALNUTS, BRAZIL NUTS ETC NUTELLA - made from Hazelnuts MUESLI BARS CONTAINING NUTS TRAIL MIX PROTEIN BALLS - containing nuts BISCUITS/CAKES/MUFFINS containing nuts , most Banana breads contain Walnuts, Carrot Cake contains Walnuts, other cakes have slithered almonds. YOGHURT OR CHOCOLATE COATED NUTS OR NUT PRODUCT The above are the obvious to me, and when I think NUTS I think the above and I think - DO NOT EAT! For our family we are NUT free, we do not have any NUTS in our house nor do we EAT NUTS. We are not asking you to do the same however when it comes to School/Kindy when you are aware of NUT Allergies PLEASE take it seriously. If you have people in your life that you know have these life threatening allergies, PLEASE , I stress to you please take it seriously. We understand that if you do not have a family member / friend with life threatening food allergies , it is easy NOT TO KNOW, thats ok. However please always ask the person whom is allergic or their parent or guardian if you are unsure. We would rather you ask then take a risk. We are educated because our childs life is in our Hands, we can only ask that you have read this and understood and I pray that you can make the little changes in your meal plans to save our child/ or person from having an anaplylaxis or allergic reaction to NUT exposure. PLEASE SHARE AND SPREAD THE AWARENESS OF LIFE THREATENING NUT ALLERGIES . As I have mentioned we are very fortunate to have such wonderful family , teachers and school families/friends that surround us, that have been very supportive and proactive when it has come to Jays food allergies. I understand that we are at the end of the year and everyone is busy and when you do not live with food allergies day in and out , you may forget.
