Target: students or recent graduates interested in the theme of the fight against child malnutrition, all nationalities accepted. Number of scholarships 3 scholarships to attend the RomeMUN2015. Deadline: December 1, 2014 The World Food Programme (WFP - World Food Programme) is the world’s largest humanitarian Organization in the world. The agency is responsible for food assistance to fight hunger worldwide. In emergencies, the Agency provides food in critical areas, saving the lives of victims of wars, civil conflicts and natural disasters. After the emergency ends, the food assistance provided by WFP helps people to rebuild their lives and that of the communities in which they live in. WFP is a UN agency relied entirely on voluntary contributions. In 2013, WFP has provided food assistance to more than 80 million people in 75 countries. WFP staff is composed of about 14,000 people, most of them working in remote areas, directly assisting the hungry poor. The theme of Expo 2015, «Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life» is one of the fundamental principles of the United Nations - to fight hunger and poverty – and it will be the core of the Universal Exposition that is held in Milan for six months, from May to the end of October 2015. The main theme of Expo 2015 includes the issues of food security and nutrition, sustainability and poverty reduction, development and cooperation, as emphasized by FAO, IFAD and WFP Expo 2015 permits to the United Nations to spread the knowledge and skills acquired over the decades in order to increase their efforts to reach one day the goal: ZERO HUNGER. Despite the progress made in achieving the first Millennium Development Goal - to halve the proportion of the number of people suffering from extreme poverty and hunger - still 805 million people in the world are chronically under-nourished. The end of 2015 will mark the deadline for achieving the eight Millennium Development Goals. Nevertheless, hundreds of millions of people continue to suffer from poverty and hunger. Faced with the necessity of producing 60% more food to fee 2 billion more people expected in 2050 and dealing with emergencies related to climate change, the international community is called to develop a series of new targets to promote sustainable development in the post 2015. Moreover, WFP has always stressed the crucial role of women in the fight against hunger and malnutrition «Women have to deal with and are already dealing with every part of the food system: ensure the needs of the family, play the role of manufacturing in small farms, and then they sell the products. Yet we know that these women are denied access to resources, primarily in education», said Ertharin Cousin, Executive Director of the World Food Programme. Education plays a central role not only in the fight against hunger and malnutrition but, more generally, to promote the development of people and Nations. The WFP stressed also the crucial role of women in the fight against hunger and malnutrition: “Women have to deal, and already deal, with every single part of the food system; they provide to family needs, they are producers and sellers at the same time. Notwithstanding, we know that they are refused the access to fundamental resources, first of all education”- affirmed Ertharin Cousin, WFP Executive Director. Education plays a very important role not only in the fight to malnutrition, but, generally speaking, in pushing forward the development of a country. In order to get out of poverty, it is essential to invest in and education, primarily of women. An educated woman nourishes herself, her children, her community, her country. In addition, this is a vital pre-condition for achieving the ambitious goals preset by the international community and to «feed the planet». Questions to be answered. Do you think that the instruction and the education, primarily of women, is the «conditio sine qua non» to reduce the poverty and to fee the planet? With policies, measures, concrete acts do you think the international community and the Specialized Agencies have to implement to achieve the realization of this goal? In preparing your paper, please refer to case studies and best practices, and try to suggest new ones too. Essay format.
