COUNCIL RE-AFFIRMS DECISION TO PROCEED WITH NEW HQ . . . It caught some members of city council off guard Tuesday, but the decision to build a new purpose-built facility adjacent to the Timken Centre was actually agreed to on March 10 of this year. At that time, council also approved formation of the police building committee which fulfilled its mandate late last month with a comparative cost analysis of building new versus renovations to the existing Colin McGregor Justice Building. The final version of the Class C estimates were presented at Tuesdays council meeting where, by a 5-3 vote, council selected Option D - a 30,000 sq. ft., one-storey building with full basement at an estimated cost of $11.5 million. This compares to $13.8 million for a phased-in renovation of the existing police station and $11 million to renovate the justice building while moving the police service to a temporary location.
