COURT BATTLE LOOMS OVER BUILDING AT 317 CURRIE ROAD When affected residents approached SAVE OUR BEREA for help, we spoke out strongly against this development. We said we have seen an alarming pattern of spot rezoning against residents’ objections, and we warned that if it continues to take place across the Berea, the unique character of the area will be destroyed forever. We also asked why the city is going against the advice of experts and ignoring its own town planning schemes? Why change from GR 1, which allows the building of apartments that fit into the surrounding area, to GR 5 which allows for a high-density building totally at odds with the character of the Berea? This is zoning for the CBD and the beachfront and has no place in a suburban area. No wonder surrounding property values have dropped. As Kevin Dunkley rightly points out, that at the stroke of a pen” the developer is enriched by millions, while surrounding residents see their homes devalued. More disturbing is the allegation by residents that the foundations for the existing GR 5 building were already in the ground before the Council decision on the rezoning. If this is correct, then this would be a travesty.
