CR baseball splits with Siskiyous in twinbill College of the Redwoods showed a little bit of everything — the good, the bad and the ugly — and split with Siskiyous in the opening doubleheader of a Golden Valley Conference three-game series at the Arcata Ballpark on Friday, winning the opener 9-7 before dropping the nightcap 7-2. “We had great energy in the first game,” said CR head coach Bob Brown. “We came out a little anxious, but we pulled ourselves together and were able to rally and have our best hitting game of the season. Then in the second game we kind of let things slip away and we just didn’t have the fight to get back in it.” CR overcame a four-run first inning to start the action as the Eagles, who had 15 hits in the game, took a commanding lead early. The Corsairs, however, rallied in the bottom of the third and fourth innings, picking up seven of their 12 hits in those two innings, and pushed across six runs (three in each frame) to tie the ball game 6-6. CR’s Ansel Cecil, Juston Frazier, Ryan Stearns and Andrew Matyshock each had multiple hits in the contest as the Corsairs took the lead in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Frazier, which scored Cecil, who doubled to lead off the inning and went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI in the game. Siskiyous answered in the top of the seventh with a solo home run to tie the score again 7-7, but the Corsairs responded with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on RBI hits by Matyshock and Cecil to retake the lead for good. CR starting pitcher Brandon Downey went six innings for the no-decision with three strikeouts and no walks, while Kevin Llamas picked up the win in two innings of relief, allowing just one earned run with three Ks. CR’s Donald Robinson came on to seal the win in the bottom of the ninth, striking out one and walking one to pick up the save. The second game, however, went a little different for CR. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie through the top of the fifth before the wheels came off the bus. The Corsairs made back-to-back throwing errors, which led to four Eagles runs off of two hits in the frame and Siskiyous, which added two more in the eighth, led 7-1 heading into the ninth. Redwoods pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by Donald Robinson to make the score 7-2. “Give them credit, they forced us to make plays and we didn’t make them,” Brown said. After the split, the Corsairs stand at 2-5 in the GVC and 3-15 overall. The two teams will play the rubbermatch today at 11 a.m. to complete the series.
