CRUEL CROCODILE KILLINGS..........Rustenburg/ Kroondal –South Africa. The National Council of SPCAs stepped in and halted the slaughter of fully conscious juvenile crocodiles at the Kroonkrok Farm in Kroondal, where the Penzhorn’s have been commercially farming crocodiles for years. In February last year Dr. Herbert Penzhorn died a gruesome death when he was mauled to death by his own crocodiles. After this most unfortunate event, the family has been unsuccessful in selling the farm. On the 9th of May 2012 a routine inspection of the facility led to the uncovering of the horrific manner in which juvenile crocodiles – under 700 mm long – were being killed to provide skins for the fashion industry. Globally, many of these crocs suffer all the horrors of factory farming – including extreme crowding and confinement, as well as cruel treatment during slaughter. Crocs are sometimes skinned alive due to the belief that live flaying makes exotic leather suppler. According to international and national standards, pre-stunning is required to render animals unconscious before the slaughter procedure itself is undertaken. Visual footage taken by NSPCA personnel at the scene in Kroondal demonstrates that the juvenile crocodiles were not pre-stunned and remained fully conscious during this “pithing” process (the method used to slaughter the crocs). The farm manager alleged that the crocodiles were pre-stunned, then placed into sacks and numbers accumulated until they were slaughtered. During this time they supposedly regained consciousness. The method of slaughter itself was that a knife was used to cut the nape of the neck, and then a screwdriver inserted to mangle or scramble their brains before a long wire was run down their spinal cords. Spokesman Nazareth Appalsamy told the Platinum Weekly that the farm manager pleaded ignorance. He allegedly told the NSPCA that he used to be nothing more than the driver. Due to circumstances after the death of Dr. Penzhorn, he was basically forced to take over the farm manager’s position. Personnel from the National Council’s Farm Animal Unit intervened, stopped the process and issued a warning in terms of the Animals Protection Act. A return inspection was made the following day, 10 May 2012. This was a follow-up inspection and the NSPCA noted that there had been improvements, but what they witnessed was horrific and they will be laying criminal charges. This instance reiterates the calls of the NSPCA regarding the outrageous treatment of animals to provide skins for the fashion industry.
