CRUISE - Southern Caribbean Our first cruise! Ed had been in the Navy, so his thoughts (original thoughts) were, Last thing I want is to be on a big ship again! Well, we had taken one of the guys who worked for Ed and his wife out for a Christmas dinner at Z-Bistro, our favorite restaurant, which has since been replaced by the Cobblestone Grill, in Zionsville. That couple was all excited about the fact they were going to be going on their ??? cruise within a couple weeks. So, that was the main topic of discussion at dinner....cruises, and their going to be going AGAIN! So, I squirmishly asked Ed if hed ...please, just consider it... He said OK... Thats all it took.... An, OK. So, I stopped by a travel agent the following work day, after work, and picked up some brochures. We set sail the following March from Puerto Rico for the Southern Caribbean. We spent 2 nights in San Juan, touring the island, then boarded our ship. What a trip! It was wonderful! We visited several islands...the ship did most of its sailing at night, which left us almost a full day to visit each island. Saba, the Grenadines, St. Vincent, Barbados, Martinique, St. Martin, St. Thomas...and I probably forgot a few. On Barbados, we chose to take a helicopter ride that covered the entire island. That was quite exciting to see the whole island up close...but far enough away...then to see how wed zoom down close to the cruise ship as we returned! Just me and Ed on that helicopter along with the pilot...so we got to ask all the questions we wanted. On St. Martin we did the 12-Metre sail boat race! Oooohhh how exciting that was too! Two sail boats, each having been in the Americas Cup. Those who signed up, were divided into two teams. Half on one, half on the other. I dont recall what my and Eds duties were...we were on the same boat. There were probably about 12-15 on each. But, the race was on...out in the ocean. OUR ship won!!! But, along the way, there were a few who just couldnt stand the fast tacking and keeling that went along with that type race. So...sad for them, but Ed and I had a blast!!! Martinique was one island that we chose to checkout the local markets. Spices and fish markets (all outside) were just what we were looking for. No, they werent super markets...but local and the smells from the spices...all freshly picked/harvested were quite sensational with great aroma...not like the bottled kind we get here in the states. And the fish...no salmon, but local fish...of all kinds...just taken off the boat a short time before and some being stocked while we were there. And...at St. Thomas...jewelry stores!!! Well, there is more! That is where Black Beards and Blue Beards castles are. We visited Blue Beards castle (Ill show a picture someday...if I come across it). That was interesting...its now a resort. But, in its day...I guess Blue Beard was quite a ladies man. He had numerous gir friends (reminds me of someone I know...). Well, his wife, Josephine decided she was going to get rid of them. So...she very graciously, wisely, tactfully, and manipulatively, invited them all over to a friendly, very friendly... tea. To not go any further with this story, Ill say...she never had problems with any of them again... Oh, yes...and the jewelry... Ed bought me a beautiful gold necklace... Im hoping it wasnt stolen during all this house stuff. Ive not been able to find it yet...nor my diamond earrings, etc. Ill have to file a theft report if so. But...no one, but no one, can ever steal my memories!!! AND, what great memories I have...!!!! The pictures of me and ED were just after dinner one evening. As we were leaving the dining hall, these vicious characters captured us...And, someone took our pictures! FUN!!!! Well...I must say, we met a super couple that Ed and I both so thoroughly enjoyed their company...and all the fun things we did... The following year, we signed up for an Alaskan cruise. Ill tell you more re it later...
