CULTURAL MAPPING TEMPLATE FOR SARIAYA (PART 1) By Eric J. Dedace TANGIBLE CULTURE 1. ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI PARISH CHURCH – built between 1743 – 1748 during the terms of parish priests Fr. Martin de Talavera (May 20, 1741 – May 1744), Under the jurisdiction of the Fr. Provincial ( November 23, 1745) and Fr. Joaquin Alapont (May 20, 1747 – November 1750). 2. SARIAYA EAST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BUILDING – Gabaldon style, built in 1917 3. SARIAYA EAST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HOME ECONOMICS BUILDING – Gabaldon style 4. SARIAYA MUNICIPAL BUILDING – designed in the Art Deco style by Architect Juan Arellano, built on July 3, 1931. 5. JOSE RIZAL MONUMENT – built by Mr. Eusebio Cortes and inaugurated on Rizal Day December 30, 1924. 6. GLORITA MONUMENT – built by Mr. Eusebio Cortes and inaugurated on Rizal Day December 30, 1924. 7. OLD CEMETERY – built and used during the Spanish times. 8. DON CATALINO RODRIGUEZ ANCESTRAL HOUSE – built in the early American period, declared a Heritage house by the National Historical Institute on October 10, 2008. 9. GOVERNOR NATALIO ENRIQUEZ ANCESTRAL HOUSE –designed in the Art Deco style by Architect Andres Luna de San Pedro and built in 1931. Declared a Heritage house by the National Historical institute on October 10, 2008. 10. CARMEN RODRIGUEZ ARGUELLES ANCESTRAL ANCESTRAL HOUSE – designed in the Art Deco style by Architect Juan Nakpil (National Artist for Architecture) and built in the 1930s. Declared a heritage house by the National Historical institute on October 10, 2008. 11. RUINS OF THE GOBERNADORCILLO ROMAN REYNOSO HOUSE – burned in the Japanese started fire of 1944. Once the grandest and most beautiful house in town where visiting high placed government officials stayed. It was the venue of the grand party given to visiting American Secretary of War Francis Burton Harrison in the 1920s. 12. SARIAYA CHURCH CONVENT – built in 1922 during the term of parish priest Fr. Policarpio Trinidad (August 1922 – March 1924). 13. ST. JOSEPH’S ACADEMY – built in 1921 by the nuns of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM). A premier Catholic High School for women which had a dormitory for students from other towns of Tayabas, later Quezon Province. 14. ROSENDO VENAL HOUSE – the oldest existing house in Sariaya built in the 18th century. 15. DR. SIMEON RODRIGUEZ HOUSE – built in 1917. 16. DE VILLA HOUSE (Quezon Avenue) – 17. PETRA OBISPO ANCESTRAL HOUSE – built in the early American period (1922). 18. BANAWA ANCESTRAL HOUSE (Barangay Lutucan) – 19. ALCALA – JUMPALAD ANCESTRAL HOUSE (Barangay Pantoc) – built in 1900, and its most prominent visitor was American Governor General Dwight Davies . 20. LUMANGBAYAN STONE CHURCH (Barangay Tumbaga I) – at Sariaya’s third town site built in 1703, now in ruins. 21. SARIAYA WATER RESERVOIR – built on September 14, 1914, the first in the whole of Tayabas Province. 22. CONCRETE LAMP POSTS – built in the 1920s when Sariaya started to have electricity. 23. IMAGE OF THE SANTO CRISTO DE BURGOS – a gift from King Felipe V of Spain, circa early 1700s. 24. PETRA RODRIGUEZ ANCESTRAL HOUSE – built in 1929. 25. MONASTERY OF ST. CLARE – built in the 1950’s. 26. OUR LADY OF MT. CARMEL SEMINARY – built in 1955, has two Philippine Cardinals (H.E. Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, Archbishop of Cebu and H.E. Cardinal Sanchez) and an Archbishop (H.E. Angel Lagdameo, Archbishop of Jaro, Iloilo and the President of the CBCP) as distinguished alumni. 27. AGLIPAYAN CHURCH – built in 1931. 28. UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST CHAPEL – built in 1912. 29. DON LUCIO RODRIGUEZ ANCESTRAL HOUSE – 30. MORONG BARRIO SCHOOL BUILDING (Gabaldon style) – built in the 1920s. 31. MAMALA BARRIO SCHOOL BUILDING – built in the 1920s. 32. OLD BELL OF SARIAYA – circa 1787 placed on the topmost fourth level of the church belfry. 33. SMALL CHURCH OF BUCAL – Sariaya’s second town site, built in 1641, now in ruins. 34. THE ICON NINYA MARIA – a small “Santo” of the child Mary owned by Donya Margarita Rodriguez, Accordingly, its head and hands were of ivory, with a golden robe and its crown, earrings and clothing festooned with precious stones. It also had its own landholdings or “Bienes”. Kept in a bank for safe keeping. 35. THE ICON SAN ISIDRO LABRADOR – the Spanish patron saint of farmers owned by the family of Dr. Isidro Rodriguez and used during the May 15 “Piyesta ni San Isidro” now widely known as the “Agawan Festival”. INTANGIBLE CULTURE 1. PAAWITAN – an old Sariayahin tradition that centers around the drinking of Lambanog, that featured spontaneous banter in Tagalog with the verses sung in lilting “Sagutan” fashion by men and women, accompanied by appropriate guitar music. 2. MARCHA NG SARIAYA – composed in 1981 by Mrs. Esther Dedace-Alcala, sung by students as the town hymn of Sariaya. 3. FIESTA NI SAN ISIDRO LABRADOR (May 15) – Sariaya tradition since the Spanish times. 4. PAMAHIYAS (Tinapay ni San Isidro) –MAKING – Sariaya tradition. 5. SANTO KRISTO: ISANG SENAKULO – started by the Sariaya Tourism Council in 2006. 6. FIESTA OF SANTO CRISTO DE BURGOS (September 14) – since the 18th century during the arrival of the said icon from Spain according to the oral tradition. 7. PASTILLAS –MAKING – since Spanish times. 8. BREAD- MAKING (PINAG-ONG, BROAS, APAZ, BUNETE, PAN DE ALEMAN, TORTA REAL, PAPUTOK, etc) – Sariaya tradition. 9. RIZAL DAY PARADE WITH A “REYNA” (December 30) – started in 1914 up to the 1920s. 10. SARIAYA GARDEN DAY AND FAIR (February) – 1920s 11. FIESTA OF NINYA MARIA (September 15) – early 1900s. 12. COOKING OF NATIVE DISHES (Minuraang Hipon, Perehil, Binuong Manok, etc.) – Sariaya tradition. 13. TAMALES – MAKING – Sariaya tradition. 14. “PATAASAN NG GALILEA” (Salubong) – a Sariaya tradition in the Pre War days that involved using a “Galilea” or a tall arch made of bamboo decorated with flowers and electric bulbs. 15. MORO-MORO COMEDIA – Sariaya tradition. 16. SARIAYA ZARSUELA – Sariaya tradition since the Spanish times. Documented by a natural scientist Frenchman Antoine-Alfred Marche during his visit to Sariaya from May 11-24, 1880. 17. HOSSANA – a traditional reenactment of the entry of Christ into Jerusalem managed by the “Adoradores de Nocturna” in the old days. 18. TENEBLAS – A Holy Wednesday ritual inside the church in the old days that involved the use of the “Teneblario”, a large triangular wooden structure with candle holders from the top and going down on both sides.
