CUP OF EXCELLENCE Definition: An annual event currently held in 11 producing countries that relies on juries of expert coffee tasters to assess recently harvested, high-quality coffees. Samples that meet the Cup of Excellence scoring threshold are auctioned off online to international buyers. The program, administered by U.S.-based Alliance for Coffee Excellence, began at a time when coffee prices were at historic lows. Then intention was to identify and publicize remarkable coffees from different regions and to help growers receive higher prices for their efforts. The first COE was held in Brazil in 1999, and early program successes have spawned COE’s throughout South and Central America, as well as in Rwanda and Burundi. In addition, the online-auction model that COE helped pioneer has become common practice amount farms and producer groups looking to efficiently and profitably connect with faraway buyers.
