CUSTOMER PROTECTION AND END-USER RELIEF ACT PROTECTS NEW MEXICO FARMERS’, RANCHERS’ WAY OF LIFE Washington, DC (June 24, 2014) Today, the House of Representatives passed the Customer Protection and End-User Relief Act. This legislation reauthorizes and reforms the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), an independent government agency that regulates commodity futures and option markets. “New Mexico has a long and rich heritage of farming and ranching. We must work to ensure that the federal government does not trample on this industry and this history,” said Congressman Pearce. “In Congress, we must protect these vital industries in the United States. The legislation we passed today will not only protect New Mexico farmers’ and ranchers’ way of life, but ensures the government does not place undo regulatory burdens on the markets. I was proud to support my district, and farming and ranching nationwide, by voting for this legislation.” NOTE: H.R. 4413 passed the House of Representatives with a final vote of 265-144. The CFTC was last reauthorized in the 2008 Farm Bill that expired Sept. 30, 2013. This bill would authorize appropriations for the CFTC through 2018.
