Cachar DC lifts ban on orchestra programmes. Now orchestra programmes must conclude by 10 pm SILCHAR, December 18: Cachar deputy commissioner Gokul Mohan Hazarika withdrew the ban on orchestra programmes which was imposed by the administration a few days back to thwart illegal gambling business that had been mushrooming in the district. Sujit Kumar Das of Barak Valley Artistes’ Forum said that the district administration had agreed to their demands and lifted the ban from orchestra programme recently. He said that the deputy commissioner told them that the ban has been lifted by the administration and orchestra programmes could be organised without any hassle. However, the deputy commissioner told them the programmes should conclude by 10 pm. He also assured the members of the Forum that the police administration would keep a strong vigil on areas nearby the programme site to thwart any kind of betting activities. It can be recollected here that the decision to put a ban on orchestra came after the allegations over the gambling centering round cultural programmes and orchestra performances just after Durga Puja. Many alleged that beside the main stage of the programme, unscrupulous elements set up temporary illegal betting dens for that night. The betting continues till the programmes get over and sometime it continues the entire night, people alleged. The Cachar deputy commissioner at that time has directed the superintendent of police Digantah Borah to implement the ban across the district. He, however, made it clear that cultural programmes could be organised after taking permission from the district administration. Hazarika clarified that in order to organise a cultural programme after dusk, the organisers have to take the permission prior to the day of programme. He said that the programme has to be concluded by 10.30 pm. The organisers have to assure the administration that no betting den would be set up in and around the programme site. In the wake of prohibitory order on organising orchestra programmes, the cultural activists under the banner of Barak Valley Artistes’ Forum staged protest demonstrations demanding lifting of the ban.
