** Cafeteria Workers - how many of these sweet women can you identify? ** What stories can you tell? Two things stand out in my mind. 1.Guess there was no free / reduced lunches during the 1950s / 1960s. Least not at Glade; I recall that students had to stand at the garbage cans and empty other students plates, as we finished lunch. Cleaned tables. Workers ate free. 2.Perhaps my most vivid memory of the cafeteria involves my sweet cousin and one of my best friends, Betty Cooley. A group of us was walking to the cafeteria. Fifth grade; Mrs. Monnihans (sp.) room; located in a room somewhat behind the auditorium. We perhaps had been coming from the bathrooms as we were coming from the main building; across the hypotenuse I suppose; not on the sidewalk as we should have been. Dirt; sand; little grass as I recall. I stepped on a stick. Bout 5-6 inches long. Stick flew high in the air; came down, landed in the side of Bettys foot. Down on my knees and profoundly sorry, I pulled the stick from her foot. Lunch was uneventful; back to class. Not long after returning to class, Betty, seated at the desk in front of me, fainted. Fell on the floor. Crying; thought I had killed her. Gerald Holifield had the last desk on our row. Couple seats behind us. Gerald rushed forward and picked Betty up. I was crying but Betty was alright. I wonder if Gerald remembers this? Flash forward perhaps 50 years, January, maybe February 2010. My sweet cousin and good friend Betty is in the hospital, on Hospice. During one of our last visits, I asked Betty if she remembered the incident. Betty did. Smiling, said she loved it because Gerald came and picked her up. Thought Gerald was the cutest boy in fifth grade did she, my dear sweet cousin Betty. **** I dont remember much about the cafeterias at Glade. Back then, I was a vegetarian; before the word was coined; I typically ate my roll and a swig or two of milk. Vegetable soup; liked that. As a teacher, I had Breakfast Cafeteria Duty for 14 years in the Petal School District. The cafeteria workers were wonderful, caring people. Knew their students by name; celebrated each students birthday and they made sure that students were made to feel special. Lots more I could say . . . Please share some of your memories of the cafeteria workers back in the day at Glade. Pictures are 1965, 1964, 1963, & 1962.
