Call for student veteran presenters: Please share widely! When: Wednesday 19 March, 2014 11:15 - 2:15 Where: JW Marriott Conference Center, Indianapolis, IN ... What: All Day Workshop on Accommodating Student Veterans in Higher Education and Writing Classrooms as part of the Conference on College Composition and Communication (ncte.org/cccc/conv) (College English teachers most important conference) ----- Writing War and Beyond: Continuing Dialogues of Military Experience Through Accessible Writing Opportunities Nearly 800,000 members of the military community have already enrolled in college courses since the post-9/11 GI Bill was introduced in 2008. Many more will follow. Our classrooms are growing with active duty military, veterans, spouses, and children; still more members of this community remain outside the walls of higher education. Our goal as educators and researchers is to help a much larger community improve their writing and communication skills through research that better informs pedagogy, classroom instruction, mentoring of aspiring writers and researchers, on and off-campus workshops, and resources that meet the needs of this special population. On the surface, open access offers us an opportunity to achieve this goal by reaching a larger number of community members at a much lower cost. Yet the newness and diversity of open access can be confusing and overwhelming to educators and researchers, thus stymying our abilities to reach out to the larger community. This workshop aims to demystify the idea of open access in research about and education of the military community. We also aim to expand the definition of open access in terms of not only technologies and resources available for in terms of how we as educators can offer open access of our skills to local military community members outside the classroom. This full-day workshop will help educators better understand the role of open access in teaching and researching the military community. We will provide more information on a variety of questions, including: ● What open access resources can assist in bridging the gap between traditional composition students and their military counterparts? How can these resources be incorporated to be provide a better understanding of the military community and culture? ● How are military community members using technologies to communicate with families, friends, and other members of the community? How can we use these technologies to better assist the military student in their ability to communicate more effectively in their personal, military, and academic lives? ● How do we establish and use community writing workshops as a way to make our skills open access to those not enrolled in our classes? ● How are we working with military members through open access resources and technologies to help the community write about their experiences and share these experiences with a larger community interested in the culture and experiences of the military? If you are a student veteran, a group of college English teachers from around the country want to hear from you. Option 1: Present a poster (digital or paper) on a topic that fits our call (see above) Option 2: Be a part of a student veteran panel to discuss issues related to our call (see above) Please submit a 250 word rationale or abstract along with your contact information to [email protected] by Feb 15.
