Call to Action!!! Press release: Boogie Boarding banned in NYC!!! To Whom It May Concern: The NYC Parks & Recreation Dept. have sent out a directive that all boogie boarding is banned in NYC waters! This is a moral outrage and pure discrimination against one the oldest wave riding techniques in surfing history. This is the 1st time an ocean facing international city has banned the sport of boogie boarding. Surfing on NYC beaches was made legal in 2007, opening the door for thousands of NYC surfers to finally catch their waves without the fear of being ticketed and/or arrested. Now they have reversed part of their agreement in banning a wave riding craft and for no apparent reason. The NYC Parks Dept. and the Lifeguard Union continue to operate in a cloak of secrecy out of their Manhattan offices where these individuals basically have no ocean facing knowledge. For the legalization of surfing beach, the New York State Health Code & also the NYC Health Code had to be changed, however in both of these codes (which are identical), it states in §167.29 Control of Beach and Water Use, there is no definition or reference to “boogie boards”, “body boards’ or even “flotation devices”. The Parks Dept. claim is that boogie boards are a “flotation device. Wikipedia writes, “A personal flotation device (abbreviated as PFD; also referred to as a life jacket, life preserver, Mae West, life vest, life saver, cork jacket, buoyancy aid or flotation suit).” With only 2 weeks remaining for the official summer season, this is exactly how the inept Parks Dept. runs an ocean facing beach, with a superior lack of ocean knowledge and even greater disregard for swimmers safety, they allow swimmers to swim directly in front of rip currents. It should also be noted that the NYC lifeguards are not USLA (United States Lifesaving Association) certified. NYC surfers will be protesting with their boogie boards 11am on Saturday August 16 at the Beach 97th St concession stand, in Rockaway Beach NYC, and will then proceed to the waters with their boogie boards.
