Calling all TEU members. Yes, that’s YOU! As many of you - TopicsExpress

Calling all TEU members. Yes, that’s YOU! As many of you know, next Monday, 21 October, the University of Auckland Council will meet to set new domestic student fees for 2014. We presume the Finance Committee has recommended a 4% increase in domestic fees, the maximum allowed by the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment. This has been the pattern for the past four years. The public will not be allowed to attend in person this legally public meeting. However, the proceedings are being 2-way live streamed in the Old Government House Lecture Theatre. We believe the University Council should listen hard to the voices of students, families, and even Minister Stephen Joyce, who has cautioned university councils to think carefully about the impact raising fees by the maximum will have on students and families. Granted, it’s a bit rich for the minister to caution university councils, while the government continues to underfund the important and necessary costs of tertiary education in New Zealand. Instead, the government has steadily shifted the rising costs for tertiary education onto students and their families. Something’s gotta give. Affordable education is a public responsibility and a public good. Affordable education is also a right for all students able to achieve, not just for those most able to pay. Make your voice heard. Bring your signs. Wear bright colours. Stand up with our students. Join AUSA - Auckland University Students Association, students and your colleagues on Monday, 21 October 4 pm, at the Old Government House Lecture Theatre. Let Council see and hear the people who pay the fees and the people who support them.
