Calling all book lovers! Today is day 10 of 12 for my book challenge! The stories I am reviewing are from My True Love Gave To Me: Twelve Holiday Stories. Sing along! On the tenth day of Christmas my true love gave me...Welcome to Christmas, CA, Beer Buckets and Baby Jesus, What the Hell Have You Done, Krampuslauf, Your Temporary Santa, Cha-arlie Brown, Polaris Is Where Youll Find Me, Angles In the Snow, The Lady and the Fox and Mid-nights by Rainbow Rowell! Non-Spoilers: In a little town called Christmas there is a rundown diner where Maria works. She hates her job, her town and her life. As soon as she graduates, shes gone. Or so she thought... When the diner hires a new chef who seems to be made out of Christmas miracles, she is intrigued, Soon she realizes how special her life really is and the power of a good, homemade meal. Spoilers: I have never read a Kiersten White book, but I have heard of Illusions of Fate and have it on my to read list. I really liked this story and have no qualms about picking up another one of her books. In fact I reallyyyy loved this story. I loved having another latin american cultured story, the characters, a town called Christmas and a sixth sense. The whole thing was fantastic. I loved Marias sense of humor. I remember the Santa at the diner that insulted her moral virtue three times by saying ho ho ho. My favorite character though was definitely Ben. I loved his entire being. I loved his vagueness about being magic and trying to fine out what was up with him. I especially loved the way Maria described his expressions. It made everything extra visual and special. It was great seeing how he changed the restaurant. Everyone was happier and tipping Maria. At the end of the first day I loved how Ben was upset because Maria did not have any tip money and he thought no one had tipped him. He took it personally like he failed. But really she gave it to Candy. Speaking of Candy, I thought it was interesting how personally he took her not getting happier from his food. He was bummed out for hours afterward. He said at some point, If you can find the right food to connect yourself to a happier time, or a happier version of yourself, it an help you remember. help you get back to who you were when you were happy. it can change everything. I thought it was very interesting that Ben was in juvie, but we never heard his story. I also liked how he compared Maria to a gingerbread cookie. He said that she was, spicy enough to keep life interesting, but with just enough sweetness to balance it out. Then later she compared him to being hot cocoa. She said he makes you glad you cold nights. One of my favorite scenes was when Ben was assisting her to make rice pudding (which really is a huge latin american thing by the way along with tamales). I also loved all the names she was guessing that were his real name. Ebeneezer was not what I expected at all. The connection of it was really great. He regretted his past and spend the future making it better. Although, my favorite scene was when she went home to serve it to her mom. She started talking to her mom and realized how much her life really did not suck. It was great seeing her fall back in love with Christmas, her job, her family and her life. She finally realized how much Rick actually cared about her. I absolutely adored him learning Spanish to be able to speak to them! What he said was so adorable! Then they pulled out all of the money they had been saving for her for years and gave it her. I loved them saying they will follow her and get jobs elsewhere depending on what college she wants to go to. I figured they were saving that money for her, but the scene was just so sweet. Then, they gave the money Maria was saving to Candy so she could escape her jerkface boyfriend! The best Christmas gift ever for her. At the end, I loved that scene too. Maria and Ben went onto the rooftop and acted all cute and stuff. They talked about going to colleges near each other and it was great. I really loved their whole relationship. It did not feel rushed or too slow. They too their time and it was perfect. Then, at the end she said she found her home and it was the cherry on top of everything. This was a great story with all the loose ends tied and great connections between everything. It had family, job, life, lessons and a boy. Everything was very balanced and I have absolutely 0 complaints about this entire story. I am really eager to read another Kiersten White now. I will be reviewing Star of Bethlehem by Ally Carter tomorrow! Be sure to check it out! We are almost done with the book! Over and out. ~Kirstens Book Nook
