“Calling on spirits” is in the same category as the “second coming.” It is not new; it was always referred to and employed by our ancestors. It was a power and phenomenon greatly feared by the slave masters when we were brought to the Americas. They gave it the misnomer “Black Magic,” made its practice illegal and attempted to annihilate or denigrate all that used it or believed in its powers. After an extensive campaign of persecution most of those who understood calling on spirits were driven underground, ostracized and discredited because of the multiplicity of negative connotations attached to the practice. Soon thereafter there was to come forth the cunning missionaries teaching about new spirits and demanding that they be called upon.
