Calmer For Some - But More Trouble Brewing For Southern Parts It was a wet and wild one yesterday, Mumbles head was the windiest spot with an 89mph gust recorded, with Port Ellen in Strathclyde the wettest with 26.8mm of rain. Much of the country saw gusty winds, heavy rain and some really sharp showers moving through with storms affecting some western and central parts as well. Today, for now at least its become a little calmer - the strongest of the winds are slowly easing away from the east coast of Scotland and Northern England and although there are some blustery showers about (especially in the west), and the tail end of the rain is still to clear from the northeast of Scotland. For the remainder of the day the scattering of showers continue - most frequent in the west and north, and still heavy at times, also falling as sleet and snow over the hills and mountains of Scotland and even the higher peaks in northern England. Its to the southwest we need to watch though as the next system is going to push in during the second part of the day to bring another spell of very wet and windy weather - this time to the south of the country. The rain with increasing winds will reach the far southwest of England during the afternoon, sweeping east during the rest of the day and overnight to eventually clear during the early hours of Monday. Gusting winds of 60-70+mph close to exposed southern coasts, and 40-60mph further inland along with heavy persistent rain will make for a pretty unpleasant period of weather as it moves through. Rain totals of 15-25mm are likely quite widely, with more over the high ground of SW England and South Wales, so surface water and localised flooding are also likely hazards. Away from the wetter south of the country, overnight tonight will be a calmer affair with a fairly widespread frost for north Wales, northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, so watch out for some icy patches. Monday itself brings a bit of a respite from the wind and rain with lighter winds, just a scattering of showers about and some reasonable sunny spells too. Temperatures will be on the cool side with much of the country struggling to reach double figures. More wind and rain arrives through the late afternoon and into the evening across Ireland though, making for a wet start to the day in many parts of the UK on Tuesday, with the unsettled weather then continuing for much of the week with more spells of rain, showers and high winds to come.
