Seule une prise du pouvoir au Cambodge par celui-ci pouvait faire intervenir les USA et le Sud_vietnam au Cambodge pour combattre les communistes vietnamiens qui dès son arrivée au pouvoir avaient déjà en quelques jours poussé leurs troupes jusquà la porte de Phnom Penh. Sihanouk voulait-il retourner après au pouvoir? Ni Lon Nol et ses amis, ni les Américains ne lacceptaient car ils navaient jamais plus confiance en lui. Il sest dailleurs proclamé lui-même Prince Rose car il croyait vraiment à lépoque à linfluence de la Chine communiste sur le Sud-Est Asiatique. Il avait même fait saccager lambassade des Etats-Unis en 1962.
