CampaignKazakhstan@gmail campaignkazakhstan.org Campaign Kazakhstan, PO BOX 66682, LONDON, E11 9ER 20 October 2013 Appeal from Campaign Kazakhstan Campaign Kazakhstan appeals to Esenbek Ukteshbayev to bring his hunger strike to a close. Campaign Kazakhstan is actively involved in protesting against the Kazakhstan government for its trampling of human, democratic and trade union rights and supporting those in the country who are involved in important struggles. We have taken up the terrible plight of the people in Kazakhstan who are burdened with housing debts that they cannot repay and who, with their families, face eviction from their homes. We know that many of them are suffering crippling illnesses and would rather die than be thrown onto the streets. We have followed and supported the campaign by the ONJ (‘Leave the People’s Homes Alone’) and have protested at the arrests in Astana and elsewhere of peaceful protesters. We have spread the news through our respective organisations as widely as possible, and in a number of different countries. In particular, we were angered by the arrest and imprisonment on 1 October of Esenbek Ukteshbayev. We understand that on 7 October he began a protest hunger strike which he is now continuing after his release last week. We admire Esenbek’s tremendous courage and determination to see a solution to the terrible plight of the people whose only homes are at risk. We are very aware of the obstinacy of the regime, the banks and the president Nazarbayev himself in refusing to show leniency. It would cost them little in comparison with the huge sums of money they use to look after themselves to immediately resolve this issue. However, we are calling on Esenbek to now bring his protest to a close. Continuing it and risking his health life would be a gift to those he so vigorously opposes. Stopping now will enable him to return to the struggle, more determined than ever to build a mass force to combat the regime. We also appeal to Esenbek to dissuade other brave fighters from beginning hunger strikes as well. We will continue to campaign on all injustices carried out by the Nazarbayev regime and support those forces who build an effective opposition on behalf of the workers and poor in Kazakhstan. For success in the struggle of all workers and poor people!
