Campaigning on doorsteps during the referendum I came across a family who all had varying degrees of hearing loss and if it hadnt been for the daughter who was able to translate, it would have been difficult for me to get the message across. Over 55% of people over 60 have some degree of hearing loss and this means that many of the SNPs 60,000 new members will be in that category. We need to bear this mind as we seek to engage and involve these new members at meetings and in campaigning activities. These, and other issues to do with making politics accessible were the theme of the fringe meeting today at Conference organised by Action for Hearing Loss Scotland, at which I was guest speaker.
