Can Minny stop wasting time and just send us Kevin Love lol? Flip is trying to get an unprecedented return for a star in the final year of his contract and its not gonna happen. Golden State is not gonna trade them Klay for the final year of Loves contract, that doesnt happen. When has anybody ever gotten a massive haul with a prospect like that for a star with 1 year on his contract? Heres some examples of the returns for stars in recent years. Carmelo Anthony to New York . Anthony had a narrow list of teams where he would sign an extension, and as a result was basically able to force his way to the Knicks. With little leverage, Denver got back a grab-bag of young parts and picks in exchange — Danilo Gallinari, Raymond Felton, Wilson Chandler, Timofey Mozgov and a 1st round pick. The Nuggets were planning to rebuild post-Melo, so they may have been less interested in established stars than other teams. But even from a pure rebuilding standpoint, the Nuggets got quantity but not much quality. Chris Paul to Los Angeles — A David Stern “basketball reasons” cloud will always hang over this trade. The then-Hornets had negotiated a deal where in exchange for CP3 they would receive Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, Lamar Odom, Goran Dragic and a 1st round pick. That’s the type of haul that Flip Saunders likely has in mind for Love — a mix of established “win-now” talent and young prospects/picks. While the deal supposedly died because the NBA was reluctant to let a small-market team lose a star immediately after the lockout, the trade that followed ended up being even worse for New Orleans. The now-Pelicans received Eric Gordon, Chris Kaman, Al-Farouq Aminu and an unprotected 1st round pick. Pau Gasol to Los Angeles — The Gasol trade provides the least guidance because Memphis committed fully to rebuilding, taking back a mix of cap relief and young talent — Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenton, Aaron McKie, the rights to Marc Gasol and two 1st round picks. Thompson, Lee and Barnes are all better players now than any of those pieces were then (Gasol had yet to play an NBA game), but the Griz weren’t looking for immediate contributors. The other challenge in weighing the Gasol package is Marc’s value at that time. He was the 48th pick, viewed as an out-of-shape project and by no means a guaranteed contributor. At the time of the trade, nearly everyone felt that Memphis had been abused. In hindsight, the deal is a much closer call.
