Can Nigerian politicians be classified into certain categories? Is there such a phenomenon as a must-rule charlatan syndrome? Naij guest writer Joe Onwukeme, from Enugu, thinks we should be cautious about who we vote into power – especially as 2015 elections fever draws nearer. Must-rule charlatan syndrome is a kind of political disease mostly passed to politicians by their politically demented supporters. The infected victims are everywhere in the polity of our nation. They are always in support of the ruling government and are easily identified during general elections. Their duties are to mobilize myriads of support groups for politicians. There are 5 categories of them: the recycled politicians, out-of-favour stooges, appointed anarchists, political hirelings, and myopic sycophants. They adopt different modus operandi through campaign rallies, propaganda, media publicity, etc. to launder their desperate and bewildered sponsors’ image in the public. As 2015 general elections draw close, we have seen varieties of the must-rule charlatans. For a better understanding, I am going to explain the role of these five categories. Recycled politicians: for the most part, a bunch of old politicians who dominated this nation in the periods of the First, Second, and Third republics. They are never tired of politics. They will support any government in power to remain relevant, get appointments, contracts, etc. Advertisement Out-of-favour stooges: politicians whose interests were not favoured by the government of the day. Also, those who committed political blunders that either could ruin them financially, or lead them to jail. In order to avoid such fate, they adopt all kinds of propaganda to defend the government’s monumental failures, thus promoting gross incompetence. During elections, they intensify their efforts by mobilizing and organizing rallies nationwide for the ruling government. Appointed anarchists: mostly the media aides, the lawless bulldogs of the government. They use social media to elevate their histrionic sycophancy to launch bitter diatribe against the assumed enemies of the present-day rulers. Political hirelings: mostly, self-seeking corrupt youths employed by desperate politicians to execute their dirty jobs. Myopic sycophants: the narrow-minded, ignorant halfwits in our society. They cut across tribes and religions. They have been brainwashed to believe the political crises and insurgency in some parts of Nigeria is a conspiracy theory arranged to frustrate the government of the day. They are stoically scandalizing the assumed political enemies of the government, and, through blind arguments, defend ‘untransformed’ activities of the government wherever they go. These 5 categories of the must-rule charlatans have mortgaged not only their conscience, but their and their children’s future. Most Nigerians fall in one or two categories explained above. They have been blindfolded. They can’t read anything other than naira figures. They often are profiteers of a system which enables a few to live off the misery of the larger populace. They see nothing wrong with promising plenty and delivering little kind of politics. The best way to deal with these must-rule charlatans and their frivolous antics is to ignore them and vote for a change in the forthcoming general elections READ MORE: naij/341574-2015-elections-nigeria-must-rule-charlatan-syndrome.html
