Can men really be feminists Benjamin De Vries and Doctress Neutopia? So much of what we do is defined by our identity as humans. In questioning materialism and mainstream society we are asking whether how we look or act is the most defining and important factor in defining our reality as human beings. I suggest that some kind of revolutionary posture is indeed necessary if we deeply and seriously address the flawed human reality that seems to be perpetuating an unsustainable level of human distress and suffering. Esp when you consider all the power we have amassed collectively as humanity has modernized and developed sophisticated knowledge of our world and along with that the technologies to control natural phenomena that once was seen as uncontrollable. Yet the pitfall of becoming aware of the human reality is that we often only see the injustice and we dont see the capacity for progression and the progress we have made so far. Or maybe it is that this is not entirely clear that despite all the human struggles in our history that any progress has been made. However its true that in Western liberal democratic societies traditionally marginalized groups have made significant gains. Yet I think its obvious that much work is still left. The problem is the core economic and ecological issues have not been resolved by the current global ruling elite and there is in fact evidence that these ruling groups have tried to sweep these issues and those raising them under the rug so to speak. I suggest we move away from some kind of pissing contest about who is more victimized by Patriarchy - Men or Women?. Instead lets explore the aspects of male domination culture and how it affects both Men and Women to creates a predatory and exploitative economy. For it is that economic real world we have created risks global peace between the worlds peoples by allowing rich groups to dominate poor ones while engaging in questionable economic (based on short term get rich quick schemes) practices that seriously degrades ecosystems on a systemic, planetary level. If this system is in place because of a lingering dominant male mentality about how to think about life it needs to be dismantled and replaced with something else. But to also consider what a post-patriarchy society might look like. Riane Eisler book The Chalice and the Blade is a good reference for such thinking esp her outlining the key aspects and attributes of the Male Dominator Culture and the alternative Partnership Culture.
