Can someone please explain the appeal of Royals by Lorde? This has been bothering me for some time now, but I kept holding out hope that it was just one of those fad songs that would fizzle out in a month or so like Wrecking Ball or anything by Florence and the Machine. After that time, I planned on perching on a throne of tween skulls and screeching I TOLD YOU SO while being bathed in tears of vindication. Clearly, I was wrong. At first, I thought everyone liked it for the sheer fact that it is so bad, but no, the horror has finally set in that this song gained bandwagon momentum completely untouched by sarcasm. How can this be so? There is no high-point or climax and the beat is empty, repetitive and boring. To be fair though, the entire song can be described like that. Id say the only saving grace is the lyrics, but no one ever seems to comment on those, so there must be some other sorcery responsible for this. After consulting the comment section on Youtube, most of the comments praise her voice, but (as Im sure any female vocalist out there will agree) its not that difficult of a song to sing AT ALL, which is probably why every jackass with a group of friends and an afternoon of practice decided to release their own cover of the song immediately after it was released... But now it dawns on me... Its got to be because of that very reason! Literally any person who can carry a tune can throw in some attitude and own that song like they wrote it themselves. The beat is so empty that you can even get the same quality from singing it a cappella with the added bonus of long, syncopated verses to get heads bobbing! Its one of those songs that anyone can sing along with and there arent any of those pesky high notes to keep you from embarrassing yourself. So basically, its Kidz Bop without the annoying kids in the background... Unless, of course, youre listening to the song in a cramped car with a bunch of kids, but Im sure youd hardly notice after the first aneurism.
