Can you imagine designing your own medical device in high school? Or going to a Real Lab to put your freshmen biology lessons into practice? Thanks to a $100,000 grant from MA Life Sciences Center, Lowell High kids wont have to imagine much longer! The LHS Life Sciences Maker Space at the UMass Lowell Medical Device Development Center (M2D2) is designed to: 1. provide all 800+ Lowell High Freshman and 15 upperclassmen with incubator space to make their learning in Life Sciences authentic through the practical application of Life Science concepts, 2. expose students to career pathways in life sciences, and 3. further the high school/college/career connection to help students see viable within-reach pathways to college and career. The Maker Space will be outfitted with high powered microscopes, life science lab supplies, computers with technical computing software, 3-D printer, and more. Starting next year, each Lowell High Freshman will spend at least one week of their biology period per year at the Maker Space, making their Life Sciences learning authentic. Approximately fifteen 11th and 12th grade students in the Lowell High School/M2D2 Early Pathways program (a yearlong internship program wherein high school students work with entrepreneurs at M2D2 and UMass Lowell faculty and interns to develop a medical device) will use the Maker Space as their laboratory to design their own medical devices. Thanks to UMass Lowell and M2D2 for their partnership on this extraordinary opportunity for our kids, and thanks to Project LEARN for authoring the grant proposal.
