Can you imagine living in the United States today unable to look up information on a computer, fill out a job application online, compose an urgent email or send documents electronically? Don’t you think you would feel disconnected with the world around you? Imagine further being unable to connect with friends online, look up lyrics to songs you love or simply giggle with friends and family over hilarious online videos. We all know that digital literacy is critical in the world today. However, watching a group of women turn on a computer for the first time in their lives, learn about the enter key and attempt to highlight text, brought an understanding of the isolation that one would experience without minimal computer skills to this instructor. The women in these photos are smiling because they are beginning to bridge that digital gap, and they understand, better than the rest of us, what that will mean to them. We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to AALRC for the laptops that have allowed us take computers to the workplace. Our center began building dreams and changing lives in 1965, before the computer age, and that tradition most certainly continues today.
