The duchess laid the necklace back on the table and leaned closer to Calico. Calico’s heart skipped a beat. As long as Isaac denounced his mother’s suspicions concerning her and Kathleen’s true identities everything would be alright but how long would it be before the duchess has her son’s full attention. She had to do something to stop this woman from running it all. Calico reached to her side. Lucky for her, Bailey had armed her with one of his trade knives in case she ever needed to defend herself. She slowly reached into the side of her gown and felt for the leather sheath Tomas had made for her. She removed the five inch long the sharp knife and laid it on her lap. All she had to do was kill this woman and pin it on Mary. Bailey had shown her how to kill someone at close range. She replayed the lesson in her mind, ignoring the words of the duchess. Incapaciate your victim with a thrust of the knife into their neck and then remove their head off. It would be a horrible death but she had no choice in the matter. The duchess had to die for the glory of God. The death of his mother would infuriate Isaac and would be perfect excuse for Isaac to arrest Mary. With Mary gone Kathleen would have to listen to Bailey. Calico leaned over the table, grabbed the back of the duchess neck and thrust the knife deep in the woman’s throat. The older woman gasped, reaching for the knife. Calico leaned closer and pushed the knife deeper. “Go to hell, Anglican. This is my family’s estate not yours” Calico snarled as she pulled the knife out and slit the woman’s neck. She leaned back as the duchess’ head hit the table and her body landed on floor. Calico heaved at the sight. She couldn’t believe she had actually killed someone, let alone a noble. Her mind raced with anticipation. She peered at her bloody gown and hands. If she was going to pin this on Mary she would have to make certain no one would ever suspect she was the culprit. Calico dropped the knife next to the rosary and fled the room through one of the secret passages.
