Canada is the only G7 country that does not have laws preventing discrimination by insurers. As a result, Brynne Stainsby’s career as a chiropractor in BC was put on hold before it could begin. Her father was found to carry the genetic mutation that causes Huntingtons. Anonymous inquiries to three major Canadian insurers made on her behalf by an insurance broker all returned the same result: She would be rejected outright, even without a diagnosis. This is the second time this same scenario has made headlines with chiropractic student Katie Lingard (thestar/life/health_wellness/2011/05/18/young_woman_faces_insurance_hoops_due_to_father_with_huntingtons.html).
