Canadas northernmost freeway. Alberta Provincial Highway 63 in Fort McMurray, located about 270 miles north of Edmonton. Due to the burgeoning oil sands industry, the municipality has grown rapidly, from a population of 38,667 in 2001 to 61,374 in 2011. The route is gradually being converted into a full freeway through the area. South of Edmonton, much of the road has already been converted to a 4 lane divided highway, although work remains to bring the entire route up to 4 lanes. To help locate the municipality, Ive highlighted in red where Fort McMurray exists, relative to the rest of Canada and the United States.
