Canberra Public Art. While driving home from frisbee this - TopicsExpress

Canberra Public Art. While driving home from frisbee this evening, I developed an opinion on Canberra public art (aka meaningfully placed items on the side of the roads). Basically I dont think were doing it right.. If your artwork is attractive enough for people to want to look at it, youve made a potential traffic hazard - if drivers want to look at it, they arent looking at the road. It is even more distracting when an artwork looks like something inappropriate at a particular angle. The only way to be responsible is to make something unappealing (although that may still be distracting..) or invisible. The most unfortunate thing about it is that the art youve created will only be admired by drivers who will only catch a 2 second glimpse of it as they drive past. The issue comes down to the user experience of the art we place near our roads. Are we thinking about what experience they are providing for people as they drive past? When a person is driving down a road, their experience of the outside world is vastly different to that of a person standing stationary in front of a sculpture. Public art placed on the side of the road should take into consideration the dynamic nature of time and space of a drivers experience. Melbourne has some great examples of this done well. Good art should create an awesome experience for those exposed to it. Just my opinion :)
