Cane price to be fixed By Express News Service The state advisory price (SAP) for sugarcane will be fixed at the Sugarcane Control Board meeting to be held in Bangalore on Sunday, Cooperative Minister H S Mahadeva Prasad said. He was addressing a gathering after launching the sugar cane crushing at Bidar Sahakar Sakkare Karakhane (BSSK) near Hallikhed (B) of Humanabad taluk on Saturday. The board, which was formed recently, consists of representatives of sugarcane growers, sugar factories and government. Promise Made Prasad assured that BSSK will clear the dues of sugarcane suppliers within 15 days. The total dues of farmers amount to `23.50 crore. Bidar Central Cooperative Bank and Apex Bank will sanction a loan of `15 crore each within a week for clearing the dues of farmers and to start crushing, the minister said. The government has already instructed the Apex Bank to sanction the loan, the minister said and added that the government will support all three cooperative sugar factories in the district. Unpleasant Scenes The Saturday’s function to mark the launching of crushing for the season at the BSSK was marked by series of protests by a section of farmers demanding reasonable price for the sugarcane supplied to the factory. The sugarcane growers raised slogans against the government and the factory management for failing to clear their dues. A few of the farmers were arrested when they tried to approach the dais. However, the arrested farmers were later released following intervention of Bidar South MLA Ashok Khenny. BSSK president Sanjaya Khenny, vice-president Veeranna Patil, directors, former minister Amare Gowad Bayapur, district Congress president and former MLC Quazi Arashad Ali and others were present.
