Canstruct and National Orthotic & Prosthetic Services (Port Moresby) Health Facilities Standard Branch, National Department of Health-PNG have worked together to deliver Chad’s new wheel chair. Almah flew from POM to Popondetta and arrived at 1pm. She came with 2 wheel chairs and a water mattress. Air Niugini kindly allowed the wheel chairs to come as luggage after we explained her needy mission. We arrived at Chad’s village to a huge customary welcome. After introductions Almah took Chad to his modest home and conducted her assessment so she could determine which wheel chair would best suit him and identify other health factors. The wheel chair was selected and we assisted her to assemble. After assembly Chad was positioned in the chair then the foot rests were adjusted and the cushion customised to suit. You can see that Almah has a prosthetic leg. There was a huge celebration afterwards with traditional food and a powerful speech from their village chief. It was very moving. “Congratulations to you on your efforts and I must admit this is the first of its kind to be experienced by the local community”. “I must thank Winston, CanstructCompany’s liaison officer. Without you Winston, the company would not have identified the disables urgent needs. With that I thank you all for your cooperating effort to make the day a success. Congratulations”. Chad then gave both myself and Almah gifts. The necklace he gave me is made of wild boar pig tusks, shells and seeds. He explained to me that this must remain in my family and is to be handed down to my children.
