Captain Charles Meinhold and a detachment of US cavalry were among the first white men to come upon the devastation of the Battle of Massacre Canyon. Many initial reports indicated that the soldiers actually put an end to the fighting. Those reports were incorrect. The troopers were stationed at what became Fort McPherson, now a national cemetery. Many officers and men who participated in the wars of the Great Plains are buried at this national historical site.
