Bans Imports of Very Young Dogs From Foreign Puppy Mills SuccessFor years, foreign dog breeders have been able to ship very young, and often very sick, puppies into the U.S. As many as one in four died before ever reaching a U.S. airport. People have routinely told animal welfare organizations that they had unknowingly purchased puppies from overseas puppy mills who became so ill they died. Back in 2008, the U.S. took steps to change this, passing a law to protect puppies under six months of age from being imported into the U.S. But the U.S. Department of Agriculture did not enforce the law. Seeking to protect these puppies, more than 30,000 Care2 members signed a petition demanding the U.S. finalize what is known as the Puppy Import Rule. Finally in August, the U.S.D.A. finalized the rule. Now, all puppies imported i nto the U.S. must be at least 6 months old, healthy and up to date on vaccinations.
