B. Bright of Sabine County was killed last night in a pistol duel with Time Battle, a negro, said to be a fugitive from Louisiana for the alleged killing of two white men several days ago. The negro was shot and killed by deputies who accompanied Sheriff Bright. The negro had been located in the cabin of another negro and the attempt to arrest him was made when the shooting started. The other negro and his wife disappeared during the progress of the fight. Sheriff Bright was buried in the Hemphill Cemetery in Sabine County. He was survived by his wife and six children. He had been elected sheriff of Sabine County on November 7, 1916. Apparently the sheriff and his wife managed the Williams Hotel in Hemphill from before-1910 until his death in 1918, although the date below is six weeks after Sheriff Brights murder: At that time (of the fire of Feb 26, 1918, the Williams) hotel was being managed by County Sheriff Bosco Bright and his wife, Nettie, who was a sister of Sim Williams. They were the parents of Sid Bright. (White & Toole, Sabine County Historical Sketches and Genealogical Records c.1972, p 68) In 1897, at age 24, he was serving as Constable of Sabine County Precinct 8 in Geneva. Bright was born September 5, 1872, probably in Van Zandt County, Texas. Note: his headstone indicates he was born in 1873. The 1900 census reflects he was a farmer and the 1910 census reflects he was a hotel proprietor. In both these censuses he was residing in Sabine County, Texas. In the 1880 census, he was 7-years-old and was residing in Panola County, Texas. His widow, Nettie Florence Williams Bright (1875-1962), was a native of Geneva, apparently never remarried, lived to the age of 87, and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Nacogdoches, Texas.
