Carter, Ince favoured for youth awards Published: Friday, January 31, 2014 Text Size: Swimmer, Dylan Carter and Shanntol Ince and table-tennis ace Jasher De Gannes are expected to walk away with the top boys’ and girls” individual awards when the First Citizens Sports Foundation stages its second 2013 Youth Awards at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Wrightson Road, Port-of-Spain, from 6.30 pm today. The trio are listed as this country’s best performer at the junior level for 2013 and head the list of 38 nominees (19 boys, 19 girls) 24 sporting disciplines. Last month, Carter and De Gannes copped the Junior boys and girls athlete awards respectively, at the Spirit of Sport Awards (SOSA) Nomination Ceremony at Queen’s Hall, St Ann’s. Carter, who joined the University of Southern California swim team this month won silver at the Dubai FINA Junior World Swimming Championships in the 50m butterfly event in August. Prior to attending USC, he used the fall 2013 semester to train with Davie Nadadores head coach Alex Pussieldi and also at home in T&T with Franz Huggins. The Tobago-based De Gannes won precious silverware at an international event, winning bronze in the girls Under-13 singles category at the Latin America U-13 and U-11 Table Tennis Championships in Guatemala after dominating at the Caribbean Cadet and Junior Championship level as well. At the 55th Senior Caribbean Regional Table-Tennis Federation Championship held in St Lucia, last year, 12-year-old De Gannes was part of the senior women’s team which also included France-based Rheann Chung, Aleena Edwards and Linda Partap-Boodan which won the women’s team crown. She also won women’s doubles silver with Chung in St Lucia. The other major contender among the girls’ is paralympic swimmer, Shanntol Ince who earned four swimming gold medals at the Youth Para Pan American Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina following victories in the women’s S9 400 metres freestyle, 100 metres backstroke, 100 metres butterfly and 100 metres backstroke.
