Cartographical History of Cumberland County - Map 2 of 120: The French and the English fought over parts of Northwest Territory (maps 1 & 2) during the 1770s, with some of the battles being called the French & Indian Wars. The French had claimed ownership of “Ilinois”[sic] since 1720, but passed to the English in 1763 with the Treaty of Paris, which brought an end to the French and Indian War. Map #3 was produced in 1778 by a publisher in London. On this map the English speaking cartographers depicted the Wabash River and the Illinois River as being the eastern & western boundaries of the “Illinois Country”. This map is titled “A New Map of Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland and North Carolina, which included portions of the Illinois Country. One notation on the map near where Coles and Cumberland counties would one day be located states, “Very Large natural Meadews; innumerable Herds of Buffaloe, Elk, Deer & bird here.” [sic] Only one road is indicated in the entire Illinois Country, that being from the mouth of the Kaskaskia River (a village) diagonally northeastward up to Poft Vincient [sic] on the Wabash River.
