Case reports from South Africa have revealed that some individuals are smoking ARVs (likely efavirenz because of its neuropsychiatric effects) in combination with marijuana (“dagga”) or in combination with methamphetamines (“whoonga”). There are reports that gangs are stealing ARVs to fuel this illicit market. Sporadic use of a single ARV among drug users is quite concerning for the development of HIV resistance. This is a recent development, and work is needed to ascertain the extent of this problem and the social consequences of this drug misuse (e.g., HIV patients selling their medications and therefore not taking all their ARV doses, etc.).........
