Sunday 5th October 2014, 27th Sunday In Ordinary Time Isa 5:1-7 Ps 79:9,12-16,19-20 Phil 4:6-9 Mat 21:33-43 Jesus said to them, ‘Have you never read in the scriptures: It was the stone rejected by the builders that became the keystone. This was the Lord’s doing and it is wonderful to see?” ‘I tell you, then that the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.’ Vineyard is part and parcel of the agrarian life of Israel. Using this very imagery, Jesus told many parables to his audience. In the Old Testament, vineyard is often compared to the people of Israel, Yahweh being its owner. The people of Israel were entrusted to their religious leaders who, in turn, oppressed and persecuted them, besides killing the prophets and seers whom God had sent to guide them. Jesus predicted this same fate to himself from these leaders. A serious warning is given to them for rejecting God’s messengers and misleading the simple people. Jesus asserts that he will become the centre of salvation history and the kingdom will be taken from the unscrupulous leaders who rejected him and persecuted his messengers. God invites everyone to cooperate with him in the building up of God’s kingdom, and anyone who is against it will be rejected.
