Causing or allowing the unnecessary suffering and death of children is a really strange way for Jesus to show us that he loves the little children - all the little children of the world. Its strange because Jesus way of showing love is wholly indistinguishable from a universe operating without him. One would think Jesus allegedly grotesquely huge love for children would be more obvious. An infant mortality rate of zero, and an inexplicable absence of childhood suffering and death, perhaps? No such thing as birth defects? Kids never getting raped or abused by clergy? Ill leave you with this: What would you think of a human parent who said that their way of showing their children love is to do nothing as some of them are occasionally raped in front of them? What would you think of a human parent who caused their children to die or suffer unnecessarily? Gods do not deserve a double standard of assessment.
