Centre for Information and Guidance India (CIGI) –one of Kerala’s major non profit organizations, has crossed the milestone of 15 years of committed efforts towards grass roots social development. CIGI has quite a number of historic moments which gives us reminiscences of our hard but sweet journey during these years. Our interventions in the educational and social fields especially among the downtrodden have drastically changed the scenario and have been widely accepted. The decade long interventions have brought tremendous growth among Kerala’s major backward sects. CIGI has extended its reach to 2.5 million beneficiaries including students of backward communities, rural women, youth, social organizations, grass roots communities and local Government bodies through its various empowerment projects and schemes. The project ‘Vijayabheri’ initiated by CIGI, on behalf of Local Self-Government bodies has made remarkable changes on quality performance of public educational institutions. Faculty of Research and Analysis of CIGI initiated many research studies on educational and social backwardness of grass roots and several inclusive actions were deployed, which has created many empirical practices. Another achievement of CIGI is its strong and unique bouquet of refined and tuned human resource including researchers, scholars, developmental professionals, trainers, volunteers etc. Grass roots social development is the focal theme of CIGI right from its inception. CIGI has developed knowledge tools for enabling civil society organizations to assess their needs scientifically and to execute remedial actions. CIGI’s mission is to popularize the scientific knowledge and methods of social development and to fine tune human resource at grass roots to initiate progressive movements towards nation building. Thousands of committed trained volunteers have been associating with CIGI in many social amenities. Projects Education and Career empowerment CIGI as Developmental practitioners striving for bringing social transformation through Career and Educational empowerment at grass roots, made many significant contributions that none else could do ever before. The project Career Empowerment has paved a milestone in service history of CIGI. The activities planned and deployed under this project is unique in its structure and benefits. Educational Guidance services to choose right stream of education after each stage, suitable to the clients aptitude and interest, are rendered at headquarters and district offices through regular basis. Free Career guidance and counseling, systematically planned workshops and seminars on career planning, Career Exhibitions, Career Caravan, Career Clinics, Aptitude tests are the activities under this project Social Action for Grass roots Empowerment (SAGE) SAGE is a premier ongoing project launched in 2009 to support and supplement the authorities to make the backward sects, functional contributors in the mainstream developmental process and nation building. The project operates in ten districts of the state with multiple intervention strategies emphasizing Minimum Level of Education, Drop out prevention, Talents grooming, Employment and employability development, women empowerment, Leadership development etc. The project has been deployed in ten types of social units spread over ten district. This project is scientific model developed through specific action researches and it has created wide impact in the implementing areas. Compete reach CIGI has been rendering coaching for various entry tests and other examinations from its inception onwards. Thousands benefited by this program. CIGI has specially designed packages for awareness building, attitude re framing and coaching. The project Compete reach includes awareness programs and coaching for Entry tests, Entrance tests, Talent tests, etc. It also have system building programs for sustainable set ups at grass roots. Students Training for Excellent Performance – STEP Step is a unique project on move focusing orphan students in the state. It identified meritorious students from orphanages and conduct series of sequential workshops and mentoring to plan their career and step up in their life. More than 200 orphanages have been involving in the process and around 2000 meritorious students benefited. Revive It is a special package designed for quality improvement of orphanages. It mainly aims at transform the orphanage environment in to a healthy state that supports the psycho-social wellbeing of children. The project focuses on system building, academic development, and facilitating supportive systems within the orphanages. Continuous training programs for care takers, awareness program for orphanage authorities, students’ trainings, Infrastructure development, psycho-social facilitation, etc. are the part of this program. Prathyasa Prathyasa is a project conceived and implemented by CIGI in collaboration with Kuwait Kerala Muslim Association. The project is to train the house wives of expatriates who are expected to undertake the role of both parents caused by the long absence of male partner. Prathyasa is a Life Long Learning project which offers training for house wives on parenting, developmental issues, developing scholastic skills, Life skills, Family budgeting and Health and wellbeing etc. It has been implementing at 15 centers across Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Trissur Districts. Leadership Effectiveness Leadership Effectiveness Is an ongoing project designed and implemented by committed resource persons of CIGI, with commendable results. It aims at exposing Khateebs/Muallims to modern education, computer literacy, life skill training, art of mentoring and counseling/ psychological counseling and motivating them to proactively involve in their Mahal affairs rather than remaining within the mosques. It is a happy augury that several Khateebs/Muallims have realized the social significance of Leadership Effectiveness and are coming forward to participate actively irrespective of organizational affiliations. The successful participants of the training play vital role in facilitating harmonious co-existence of communities in a pluralistic society unveiling their unexplored potentials in the service of humanity Services The following are the service provided at our Head Quarters on all working days Free career guidance and counseling: Free face to face career guidance and counseling by trained and experienced counselors is being provided to the needy on daily basis at HQ. Also telephonic as well as online career guidance are also being provided. Aptitude tests CIGI pioneers in introducing aptitude tests in Kerala, has developed Aptitude tests named C DAT, which is first of its kind standardized to Kerala norm. Students of 8th to12th standards can enjoy the benefit of these tests. Registration assistance for admission We are providing option registration assistance for various professional courses including Medical and Engineering Coaching for competitive examination CIGI is also functioning as competency coaching centre for various entry tests of PSC,UPSC, SSC, RRB, UGC,. Hundreds of candidates have been place successfully after finishing CIGI Coaching Entrance test centre CIGI is a test centre for admission tests for UG and PG Course of JamiaHamdard, New Delhi Students fine tuning workshop Out of academic knowledge, a student needs to be trained in various aspects to fine tune their life skills like self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, coping with stress and emotions etc. Since its inception CIGI is providing these life skill trainings through regular programmes and vacation camps. Psychological counseling Psychological counseling services are provided in CIGI by expert clinical psychologists. Psychometric lab We have well set up psychometric lab containing IQ tests, Personality assessments Tests, Career Interest Inventory, Aptitude tests Consultation for developmental activities We are also providing expert consultation for developmental activities of grassroots voluntary organizations, service improvement of orphanages and for performance excellence of educational institutions etc. Thematic Areas 1. Educational and Career empowerment Focusing on mainstreaming the educationally and economically backward communities with the core theme “popularization & ruralisation of career empowerment for nation development, CIGI is implementing various educational and career empowerment programs. Embarked from career counseling and career awareness programs, it has traveled forward through popular career street shows and exhibitions in every nook and corner of Kerala and moved ahead with facilitating Local Self Governments in imparting quality education at public institutions 2. Employability skill development To prepare rural youth to get access into various career entries in both public and private sectors, CIGI is conducting competency development programs and developing resource banks. People benefited from these programs were placed at various reputed position ranging from Last Grade to Civil Service. 3. Grassroots social development Grassroots social development is the focal theme of CIGI right from its inception. Towards achieving this goal CIGI has developed many inclusive intervention models which have been created remarkable impacts. CIGI was successful in developing a wide network of grassroots civil society movements producing meaningful contributions towards nation building. The Action Research projects executed by our R&D had given a scientific base to the grassroots development initiations. As a part of improving human resource base for sustaining the social development initiatives, CIGI is imparting various knowledge sharing workshops on social consceintization, development need analysis, techniques of community organizing, project planning etc. 4. Social and educational researches Faculty of Research and Analysis is a unique blend of well-known researchers and scholars from different disciplines like Sociology, Social work, Economics, Statistics, Psychology, Education etc. FRA of CIGI has conducted various research studies on Social Inclusion, Education and Psychometrics, and has developed various empirical models of community development; educational quality improvement and career related standardized psychometric tools. 5. Orphan rehabilitation Death of a parent doesn’t necessarily make one orphan in real life. But death of parental care makes one orphan. Children sheltered in the orphanages are deprived of warmth and affection of parental figures. Most of the orphanage inmates are left inside the walls of orphanages and confined to limited life exposure that makes them unfit to compete with pace of modern era. In order to change these situations, we are implementing projects focused on improving the service delivery capacity of existing orphanages and creating a harmonious cordial living environment for the orphans. We also works towards grooming selected orphans to become the gems of the society who can contribute significantly in the main stream development of the nation 6. Fortifying Expatriates life The life-blood flows through the veins of Kerala are the returns by expatriates. But in expatriates life they are unable to be with family at crucial times of life that makes emotional disturbance and non-belongingness between them and their family members. CIGI has innovated and started implementing a strategy to tackle these problems through equipping and emboldening the expatriates and their family to face the challenges. 7. Enhancing women’s lives CIGI believes if human survival is the world’s most pressing problem and if women are crucial to that survival, then the empowerment of women is essential for the emergence of new, creative and cooperative solution. Empowerment of women is critical component in the empowerment of society. By educating a woman we are actually educating a family. Towards helping the women to groom up their worth and uniqueness, we are imparting lifelong learning facilities. 8. Proactive youth force for national integration CIGI pledges to foster and support youth initiatives and involvement in progressive efforts of grassroots development. Thousands of youth and several youth organization have been trained and mentored to become catalysts of social changes which lead to national integration. 9. Leadership effectiveness at grassroots A community cannot be developed until and unless a development oriented perspective is not created in the mindset of local leadership. CIGI strives to enable the local leaders with critical outlook and increased capacity of facilitating positive changes at grassroots. 10. Knowledge lab for life enrichment The knowledge for making human life hale and hearty is being developed everyday around world. But few years back it was inaccessible for the laymen. CIGI has played a vital role in creating access to various life grooming knowledge and services.
