Ceremonial rock art is a manifestation of the sacred. When this tradition is carried on in a folk art dimension with village paintings executed by tribal women it takes on a very profound importance, as it is attributed to an energy directly given by the ancestors (purkha). Since these icons, like the pictograms of rock art, have hidden meaning and they interpret messages from the ancestors, this is indeed sacred. This tradition was dying when I decided to revive it in 1992. It has been greatly strengthened by our work in promoting it. The importance of the Adivasi woman artist as a shaman was perhaps nowhere so powerfully repeated outside North America and Australia as in our little experiment of promoting sacred art in the jungle villages of Hazaribagh. (Bulu Imam,Chapter:Identifying Sacred Sites , ANTIQUARIAN REMAINS OF JHARKHAND, Published by Aryan Books International, New Delhi and INTACH ,2014 , to be released for international distribution in August 2014. This work describes over seven hundred archaeological and antiquarian sites in Jharkhand with photos.) ,
