Challenge 6: Pies - seasonal fruit, historical receipt, what could be more amazing? I chose my receipt from The New England Economical Housekeeper, and Family Receipt Book (1845). Whortleberry pie: #183, p. 44. Whortleberries are European Blueberries. There are two varieties that I know of. Since I dont have access to fresh Whortleberries, I substituted the American Blueberry. I obtained the blueberries from a local fruit stand. They set up a wonderful stand everyday, and I had to go buy some of their produce! I used the pie paste receipt from the book, p. 40, # 161. Common paste for pies. The one problem I had was, as usual, with the flour. I had organic, all purpose, unbleached. It takes more butter and water than regular all purpose. I used my glass pie plate rather than my ceramic period one because I did not have enough blueberries to fill the larger volume. I also used my kitchen oven. I do make pies over hot coals in Dutch Ovens, but the winds are too high today to afford me that luxury. I used my period bowls and spoons and measures. The results were amazing. The pie did not make it to the cool stage, as my children discovered it. I was lucky enough to get a picture of it!
