Chamber News Feed: Could the Garden State eventually grow a few of Apple’s next products? New Jersey officials reportedly are trying to make that a possibility. According to a report by media, state representatives have approached Foxconn Technology Group, the Taiwanese manufacturer that makes products for Apple and other electronics companies, to build a plant in New Jersey, now that the company has announced plans to bring some of its manufacturing capacity to the U.S. Six states, including Arizona, Colorado and New York, are vying for a Foxconn plant to be built within their jurisdictions, media report says, citing an interview with a company spokesman. Also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Foxconn is looking to manufacture tools, molds and connectors in the U.S., though the spokesman said the company is still in talks with its clients here about what they want produced from such a facility. Hon Hai group chairman Terry Gou said any U.S. factories wouldn’t be used to make labor intensive devices such as smartphones or tablets, Bloomberg reported. The Wall Street Journal quoted Gou as saying the company is exploring the feasibility of building advanced flat panel displays of greater than 60 inches in the U.S. It couldn’t be immediately determined who from New Jersey contacted Foxconn, or what the state’s proposal entailed. Spokeswomen for the New Jersey’s Department of State and Choose New Jersey, a non-profit organization that works with the Christie administration to entice employers to the state, had no immediate information. The China Times in November reported that Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) had asked Gou and other tech leaders to invest in New Jersey. Steven Sandberg, a spokesman for Menendez, confirmed the meeting, which took place in Washington D.C., and involved Gou and other members of visiting delegation from Taiwan. He touted New Jersey as a great place in which to do business, Sandberg said, the highlights of which include a highly educated workforce, world class universities, top tier infrastructure and major shipping ports. A request for comment from Foxconn wasn’t immediately returned. A Foxconn plant wouldn’t be the first operation the company has undertaken in the U.S. In November, the company announced plans to invest $30 million for a Pennsylvania operation that would create some 500 jobs, media reported. It also made a $10 million investment in robotics and manufacturing research as a part of a joint venture with Carnegie Mellon University.
