Chandikadas Amrutrao Deshmukh, social activist, thinker and intellectual, better known to us as Nanaji Deshmukh. Tributes to Nanaji Deshmukh on his birth anniversary. His organisation skills & efforts to serve society are a source of inspiration for us. Hailing from Hingoli district in Maharashtra, Nanaji Deshmukh, was bought up by his maternal uncle, after losing parents at early age. Hailing from a poor family, Nanaji Deshmukh, raised money for his education, by selling vegetables on streets, living in temples. Impressed by Nanaji Deshmukhs work, Pujya Guruji (M.S. Golwalkar) sent him to Gorakhpur as Pracharak, later became Sant Pracharak of UP. First Saraswati Shishu Mandir in India was established by Nanaji Deshmukh at Gorakhpur in 1950. Within 3 years, around 250 Sangh Shakas came up around Gorakhpur, thanks to Nanaji Deshmukhs hard work and efforts. When RSS launched Panchajanya, and Swadesh, Nanaji Deshmukh was the managing director, and a certain Vajpayee was the editor. Inspired by Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, Nanaji Deshmukh set up the DD Research Insitute in 1969 to carry out social work. Chitrakoot Gramoday Vishwavidyalaya was Indias first rural university, founded by Nanaji Deshmukh, today it is recognized as a pioneer. Nanaji Deshmukh often used to say, that he admired Vanavasi Ram more, and he wud like to spend all his life in Chitrakoot. Nanaji Deshmukh came out with an integrated program,for rural development that covered all areas-health, education, agriculture. It can be said, that Nanaji Deshmukh and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya were the soul of the Sangh, they were the ones who defined its ideology. When RSS was banned after Mahatma Gandhis assassination, it was Nanaji Deshmukh who kept it going with his underground publications. Nanaji Deshmukh had the ability to make friends, with people across political lines, was respected immensely by all. Nanaji Deshmukh was one of the main architects of the Janata party alliance that defeated Indira Gandhi in 1977. Nanajis main opponent Chandra Banu Gupta called him a modern day Nana Fadnavis, Ram Manohar Lohia was one of his closest friends. Creating a strategic alliance with other non Congress leaders, Nanaji Deshmukh, defeated Chandra Banu Gupta twice in elections. Deen Dayal Upadhaya provided the vision, Nanaji Deshmukh the organizational work, and of course Vajpayees oratory made BJS grow in UP. It was Nanaji Deshmukh who bought different non Congress leaders in UP, on a single platform, was friends with Charan Singh, Lohia. Nanaji Deshmukh played a major role in formation of first non Congress Govt in UP, in 1967, forming BJS alliance with Charan Singh. Nanaji Deshmukh did extensive social work in MP,UP, especially in Bundelkhand, his work impacted the lives of many people. In that sense Nanaji Deshmukh was a true Karma Yogi, a man who devoted his entire life for uplift of the people, a true Mahatma.
